“Courageous” study – Lesson #4

« Courageous » Study – Lesson #4 »

As the Bible study is based on the movie "Courageous" which speaks of having courage in many aspects of our lives, the title of the 4th meeting was "A Brave Call".

The study began with a short video from the movie "Courageous" where we could see a courageous act in the scene where a man who stopped at a gas station is robbed of his Pick-up truck and clings as hard as possible to his truck to finally discover a few seconds later that his motivation was not to stop the thief but to protect his son who was sitting in the back.

A popular definition of the word "courage" says that it is not the absence of fear but the understanding that something is more important than fear.

Then as a group we discussed the most dangerous events we found ourselves in and wondered if today we would behave the same way if the situation arose. It was of course no surprise that we concluded that we would do the same thing without hesitation realizing that our fear, at that time, was less important than the person in front of us who needed help.

This is without reminding us when Joshua had to take the leadership of the people to bring him into the promised land once Moses died.

Joshua 1; 1-9:

"And it came to pass after the death of Moses the servant of Jehovah, that Jehovah spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Moses, saying, My servant Moses is dead; now, arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, to enter the land which I give to the children of Israel. Every place that the sole of your foot treads, I give it to you, as I said to Moses. You will have for your territory from the desert and Lebanon to the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and until the great sea towards the setting sun. No one will stand before you as long as you live. I will be with you, as I have been with Moses; I will not forsake you, I will not forsake you. Strengthen and take courage, for it is you who will put this people in possession of the land I swore to their fathers to give them. Only strengthen yourself and have good courage, acting faithfully according to all the law that Moses, my servant, has commanded you; do not turn it to the right or to the left, in order to succeed in everything you do. Let not this book of the law depart from your mouth; meditate day and night, to act faithfully according to all that is written there; because then you will be successful in your businesses, then you will succeed. Have I not given you this command: Strengthen yourself and take courage? Do not be afraid or frightened, for the LORD your God is with you in all that you do"

Have you noticed the number of times that God took the time to remind Joshua "to be strong and courageous"? In other words, what God is saying to Joshua is, "Your people need you to pass over your fears because something bigger and more important is right in front of you".

However, such a request from God never comes alone. God promised him in verse 3 to give him "every place where the sole of his foot would tread," in verse 7 to give him "success in all that he would undertake" and verse 9 "to be with him at every day ".

However, to do this, God gave him the key to his success in verse 8, saying, "Meditate on His word day and night."

So in summary, God tells Joshua that if he spends all his time looking for Him (God), he will find the strength to be brave and then he will succeed in everything he does.

What parallel can we do with this story in our personal, professional and family lives?

Well, we must find the strength to hold on to God no matter what, trusting Him, seeking Him with all our heart and meditating on His word day and night. That's when we too will be successful in all our businesses.

In closing, I will leave you with a short evaluation that you can do alone or with your family where you can then set 3 goals to get there.

(1 = Low, 10 = high)
